PROOF OF HEAVEN

Posted by Unknown at 4:38 AM 0 comments
I started reading "Proof of Heaven" last night. It's a true story about a neurosurgeon who dies for a period of time and claims that he visited heaven and he can prove it. It's pretty interesting so far, and I'll finish the book but already I am skeptical since he's in a coma. A coma isn't dead..and so it seems to me anything that occurs while you're in a coma is brain activity and not neccessarily afterlife. Right? Maybe he'll convince me. I'll let you know.

Signs of Seven Trilogy

"I read my first Nora Roberts trilogy and I loved it! I cannot wait to dive into more of her books. I read the "Signs of Seven Trilogy" which consists of Blood Brothers, The Hollow, and The Pagan Stone. The story begins with three boys that all share the same birthday going into the woods to camp out on their tenth birthday. During their camp out they decide to swap blood so that they would be "Blood Brothers". This ritual unleashes an evil force that returns every seven years to destroy their beloved hometown. Twenty-one years later this legend of a town possessed by demons attracts a female reporter who then gets involved with destroying the evil force, along with two of her friends. The six of them work together to attempt to save this lovely New England town. I loved the way the characters were developed. I really cared about them and the evil they had to face. " -Sindi Kunkle

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs uses real photographs of strange people to tell its story of a mysterious island, an abandoned orphanage and a strange collection of very curious photographs. As the story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here--one of whom was his own grandfather--were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow--impossible though it seems--they may still be alive. i enjoyed reading this fantasy. I found it to be light reading and very entertaining." -Sindi Kunkle

NIGHT CIRCUS -Erin Morganstern

"I read Night Circus by Erin Morganstern over the summer. It is about a circus that just magically appears and disappears in town. It has a black and white big top and all performers are dressed in black and white. It is only open at night. As I read this book, I kept thinking it would make a beautiful movie. this book takes place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are two older magicians that make a wager on two children that can perform magic. this is an entertaining book. I didn't love it, but I enjoyed reading it." -Sindi Kunkle

The Seventh Month -Lisa Gardner

Review by Sindi Kunkle:
"I just finished reading "The Seventh Month" by Lisa Gardner. The title refers to her seventh month of pregnancy. Compared to the other Lisa Gardner books I have read, this one is weak. It is a short-story novella and not as creative as her other books. I was afraid Ms. Gardner had run out of ideas or lost her touch when it came to storytelling. But then, I read "Catch Me". This book is as good as her first book in the D.D. Warren series in my opinion. The story involves a character named Charlie that grew up with two best friends. Two years ago, on January 21st, one of her friends was murdered. The following year, on January 21st, the second friend was murdered. Charlie just knows this year it will be her that the killer comes after. She spends the year preparing to be attacked by learning how to box and shoot a gun. she contacts our heroine, Sargent D.D.Warren, to explain how she thinks she will be murdered. Charlie wants to ensure the detective investigating her upcoming murder has pertinent information so that Detective Warren can find the killer once and for all. As like all good Lisa Gardner books, there are plot twists throughout. One of the things that I loved about this book is that it includes characters from her other book series. I absolutely loved this book and am feeling a sadness that I have read all of the books in the D.D.Warren series.

So, I am moving on to the Quincy and Rainie series. Here are the books in order:
  • The Perfect Husband
  • The Third Victim
  • The Next Accident
  • The Killing Hour
  • Gone
  • Say Goodbye

    The D.D. Warren series:
  • Alone
  • Hide
  • The Neighbor
  • Live to Tell
  • Love You More
  • The Seventh Month
  • Catch Me

Other books written by Lisa Gardner, but not in a series:
  • The Other Daughter
  • The Survivors Club
  • I'd Kill For That
  • Touch and Go

LIVE TO TELL - LISA GARDNER

Posted by Unknown at 2:40 AM 0 comments
Finished reading "Live to Tell" yesterday. It was a very dark read, but kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for a crime book, however, I'm ready to switch gears now and read something a little more light-hearted.

Book Description: "On a warm summer night in one of Boston’s working-class neighborhoods, an unthinkable crime has been committed: Four members of a family have been brutally murdered. The father—and possible suspect—now lies clinging to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye. Danielle Burton is a survivor, a dedicated nurse whose passion is to help children at a locked-down pediatric psych ward. But she remains haunted by a family tragedy that shattered her life nearly twenty-five years ago. The dark anniversary is approaching, and when D. D. Warren and her partner show up at the facility, Danielle immediately realizes: It has started again."

    BOMBSHELL

Patty Alexander commented: "I just read Bombshell by Suzanne Somers. I thought it was very interesting. I guess it would be consider a medical book. It is on aging and staying healthy. She takes a ton of vitamins and gets IV drips. So she isn't the average person and that is why she looks and stays so young. But again very good reading and gives you ideas on what vitamins to take."

    The Neighbor- Lisa Gardner

Posted by Unknown at 11:37 AM 0 comments

I've been swapping e-reader books with Sindi for a few months now and decided we should put together our own book club so that we can see what other people are reading too. I don't know about you but I go through book-moods where I'm only interested in reading certain types of books. I have the crime/mystery mood, the life/drama mood, the comedy mood, etc. etc. It's kind of exasperating to be in the funny-book mood and not know of a good book of that genre. Sooooooooo.. maybe this will help. We'll kind of wing it and see where it goes, I guess.

Currently I am reading The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner.

Sindi turned me on to the Lisa Gardner books and I'm hooked. They are crime/mystery type books and follow one main character, a female homocide detective.

The Neighbor grabbed me in the first paragraph and I haven't set it down since. It's really good! The main story is about a couple who have a little girl together. In the early stages of the book, the wife vanishes from her bed, and of course, the husband is the prime suspect. As the story unfolds we learn that they both have pretty disturbing histories and a complicated relationship but the thing that keeps them hanging on is this little girl. So far it's a really good read! I can't wait for it all to unfold and find out what happened.

If you haven't read the book and you want to, shoot me an email at itsvicki at charter dot net. If you have read it, leave a comment here and tell us what you thought of it.

Jan 4: Finished the book this morning.Very good. Ready to read the next Lisa book.
